Planning Ahead for St. Patrick’s Day: AAA and Portland Police Stress Safe Driving and Celebrate Responsibly

AAA Portland PD

St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate luck and good fortune, but AAA and the Portland Police Department wants to remind drivers that overindulging in alcohol can drastically lower their odds of staying safe.

Every year, alcohol-impaired driving casts a shadow over the festivities resulting in tragic losses of lives within communities and families across America. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 38% of the traffic fatalities (290) that occurred during the St. Patrick’s Day holidays (6 p.m. March 16–5:59 a.m. March 18) between 2018-2022 involved drunk drivers. In 2022 alone, there were 74 drunk-driving fatalities during the holiday, with 49 of those involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration nearly twice the legal limit.

“St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Monday this year, and celebrations will be happening not only on Monday but over the weekend as well.   At any time, driving and excessive amounts of alcohol are a deadly combination,” says Daniel Goodman, public affairs manager for AAA Northern New England.

Goodman emphasizes that impairment leads to poor judgment and slower reaction times, putting everyone on the road at risk. “Let’s celebrate responsibly and look out for one another,” he added.

The Portland Police Department is also reminding the public to plan ahead to ensure a safe celebration.  “Make a plan before you go celebrate to get home or use a rideshare service or a taxi or have a designated driver.  If you find yourself unable to drive, hand your keys over to a sober driver, said Major Jason King.  If a friend who’s been drinking considers driving, take their keys and help arrange a safe ride. And if you spot a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement immediately."

Reflective Bracelets: "Go Green – Be Seen!"

In a collaborative effort, AAA Northern New England and the Portland Police Department are working together through a program from the Maine Department of Transportation to distribute

reflective slap bracelets. These highly reflective bracelets provide added safety for walkers and bicyclists during St. Patrick's Day celebrations. The bracelets are available at all AAA branch offices, as well as through the Portland Police Department.

AAA tips for celebrating responsibly.

  • If you’re hosting a party, please have a plan for everyone to make it safely home or spend the night.  Have non-alcoholic options on hand, especially as the evening winds down.
  • Download a ride-hailing app, such as Uber or Lyft, or have a phone number for a taxi service handy, just in case.
  • Select a designated driver before the party starts.
  • Avoid speeding and ditch the distractions behind the wheel.
  • Most importantly, if you have any doubts about your ability to drive safely, don’t!
  • Always actively scan the road for pedestrians and others who may be out celebrating.

Stay safe this St. Patrick's Day by celebrating responsibly and ensuring everyone gets home safely.
